Teaching and Learning
The philosophy of the Academy is to promote the above in a happy, caring environment in which children learn through first-hand experience.
All children are expected to take part in a wide range of curriculum activities, with the exception of R.E. which is open to parental choice.
We use a topic based approach, which is organised to cover all National Curriculum requirements.
A Daily Literacy and Mathematics Lesson form part of each school day.
The curriculum will be broad and balanced and related to individual needs and entitlement. It will aim to promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils and to prepare them for opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.
The Academy curriculum is designed to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum through a variety of exciting first hand experiences which will stimulate the children’s interests and motivate them to explore their world. Wherever possible these experiences form part of a topic, which covers aspects of the curriculum enabling all children access to learning according to their ability, needs and interests.
English and Mathematics have a high priority at Rowena and we have a daily Literacy and Mathematics lesson.
All parents are encouraged to become involved in their child’s education - at the Academy and/or home. Parental help in classrooms, on outings etc. is always welcome. We also welcome help from other family members and their friends. Adult assistance during the Literacy and Daily Mathematics Lessons is especially valued.
Sex and Relationships Education
The Governors and staff have agreed a policy on Sex and Relationships education. Its main objective is to support our children through their physical, emotional and moral development by providing them with clear information and opportunities to relate to their wider world. No specific sex education is given, but when questions arise either naturally or from topic work, they are answered simply, honestly and factually. The Curriculum for science includes learning about human growth and development.
Religious Education is incorporated into the topic work wherever possible, but separate provision is made when necessary.
Children who are withdrawn from religious education or assemblies will be supervised by a teacher during these periods.
Periods of collective worship are in the form of daily assemblies, which may be for the whole Academy, year groups or individual classes.
The wishes of parents who prefer their children to be withdrawn from religious worship will be respected.
Physical Education is taught as a subject throughout school in accordance with the requirements of the National Curriculum.
All children are given opportunities to extend their physical abilities and develop appropriate skills and attitudes. These will form the basis for future participation in sports.
The Academy has a range of sports equipment that is used within the context of games lessons.
